my specs are:

Ghz:1.8
256 mg DDR ram
Geforce fx 5800 agp 8x video card
60gb hard drive
DSL connection

My 1.6 game is flawless, no lag whatsoever. Source on the other hand is laggy, and all my settings oare on the lowest they go! how do i make my game lag-free, without buying anything new?

PLEASE HELP!

your processor is what kind? is it a p4? or an AthlonXP, the ghz doesnt really say a whole lot, and try lowering your resolution a bit, and GET MORE RAM!!!, 256mb IS USED BY WINDOWS ITSELF!

its a pentium 4 processor, what would i have to buy to make it run like 1.6?
(smooth and lag free 100% of the time)

ur comp isnt exactly 'good'. the 5800 vid card is pretty ok though. its probably a comibination of the ur processor and ur ram sucking in CS: S (1.8ghz, 256MB......dude this is the source engine) and also that you have a Nvidia video card. i heard that the nvidia cards do not perform well in CS: S unless you run it on DX8 (which sux). i suggest that you get a better processor, maybe P4 2.4GHZ or the AMD equivalent. then at least get another 256MB RAM, it doesnt cost a whole lot to double your RAM when you have 256MB.

quit being so nice. his comp sucks. and no, the 5800 isn't good at all. the entire FX line blows on the source engine. hell, you can't even get DX9 effects with it.

so if i bought another 512 mb of RAM would that get rid of the little choppyness that i have? i dont get lag spikes, and i dont lag.. its just a bit choppy, and i was talking to one guy that has the exact same specs as i do, but he has 512 mb of ram, and he doesent lag. if i bought another 512 i would have like 768 mb. thats quite a but more than the recommendation.
and if i bought more ghz thats a new comp, and i dont want to do that.

your graphics card isn't gonna play source well, the cheapest card you can get that plays source well is the ati radeon 9800xt or 9800 (from what i have heard). A p4 with 1.8ghz isn't gonna be able to play source well.
I think you should get a new comp, not because your one isn't so rubbish you can't upgrade it to play source well. I just think you should swith to amd while you can. You could probably get away with just 512mb of ram in source on low settings.

i have a 9600 and a p3 868 mhz plus 512 ram and my cs source was kinda chopyy (in beta) I think id just get another 256 ram to bring it up to 512. idk.. the processor and vid card seem alright, must be the ram
